Natural silk - benefits, care, recommendations

Mătase naturală - beneficii, întreţinere, recomandări

Silk has always been highly valued and considered a luxury option in the textile industry. It is much loved for its unparalleled refinement, softness, and prestige. Additionally, it seems to come with many health benefits. It has captured people's hearts over millennia and is renowned for its beauty and shine, its durability, and many other properties that make it unique.

Did you know that natural silk fibers are only slightly thicker than a strand of hair? Even so, silk is not fragile; in fact, it is very durable compared to other fabrics. Due to its elasticity, it can stretch considerably, even up to 5 times its original length, without damage. This makes it beloved by both daily users and designers.

Despite these qualities, natural silk production is quite challenging, which has led to the development of cheaper alternatives like artificial or synthetic silk.

What is natural silk?

This silk, also known as authentic silk, is meticulously crafted from natural silk fibers, which are then transformed into various textile materials. It is a luxurious fabric primarily composed of a natural protein fiber known as fibroin, produced exclusively by insects that construct cocoons. Silk forms a thread that can be woven into a soft and precious fabric with an aesthetic and natural luster.

The most well-known silk on the market comes from the cocoons of silkworms (Bombyx mori). These worms are native to China but are also found in other areas, such as northern India, Japan, and regions of Russia's Far East.

Silkworms feed on mulberry leaves, and the process of cultivating mulberry silk (sericulture) begins with the careful rearing of young silkworms. When they reach the pupa stage, they begin to wrap themselves in a white to yellowish cocoon. When the pupae are ready and the cocoons are fully wrapped, they are collected and placed in boiling water.

This step removes the pupae inside the cocoon and breaks down what is called sericin, a natural adhesive that holds the cocoon tightly. This allows the cocoon to be easily unwound into silk filaments, which are woven into very thin threads.

Due to the unique triangular prism structure of its fibers, they can refract light. This creates the elegant and delicate sheen so characteristic of high-quality silk.

Silk production first emerged in ancient China thousands of years ago. The silk trade was a highly respected industry, and silk cultivation slowly spread to other parts of Asia and eventually to Europe. Today, China remains the largest producer of silk, followed by India and other Asian countries.

What is synthetic silk?

This artificial silk refers to a type of satin silk that is not made from natural silk fibers from insects, but from fibers such as natural cotton or wool, mixed with synthetic fibers like polyester. Synthetic silk was developed in the early 1900s as a more ethical and cost-effective alternative to natural silk. Over time, production became a mechanized process, leading to faster fiber creation.

Types of natural silk

There are two main types of natural silk: domesticated and wild. Raw or wild silk is also called Ahimsa and is harvested from cocoons that silkworms spin in their natural habitat. When silkworms leave their cocoons, they are collected and processed into silk fibers. Wild silkworms have a more varied diet, leading to variations in texture and color in their silk cocoons. Because wild silkworm cocoons are naturally harvested, they retain the natural protein sericin, which contributes to their strength but makes the texture less uniform.

On the other hand, domesticated silk is created under more controlled conditions to ensure a more consistent fiber quality. Silkworms are fed specifically, especially mulberry leaves, and cocoons are harvested before the pupae leave them. This results in a more uniform texture and less varied color, leading to a softer and more luxurious feel in silk fabrics.

The fact that there are so many types and qualities of silk makes this industry rich and versatile. Many products are made from silk, including sheets, textiles, and clothing items.

Care for silk clothing and other silk items

Silk is a luxurious and very refined material that requires special care to maintain its beauty and durability over time. Here are some tips for caring for and maintaining luxury silk clothing, as well as other items made from silk:

  • Hand wash. Silk should be hand washed in cold or lukewarm water with a delicate detergent. Avoid bleach and harsh cleaning products as they can damage the fabric.
  • Gentle drying. Do not wring luxury silk clothing forcefully. Instead, gently press them to remove excess water, then lay them flat on a dry towel. Allow silk clothes to air dry naturally; do not place them on a line in strong sunlight, as this can cause discoloration.
  • Ironing silk clothes. For best results, use a garment steamer as it helps maintain silk's natural luster and does not damage it. If you must iron silk clothes, use a low temperature and iron them inside out.
  • Storing silk clothes. It is best to store them in fabric or raffia bags that allow air circulation. Avoid plastic bags, as they retain moisture and can damage silk.

Natural silk pajamas

In today's fast-paced world, self-care has become more important than ever. From what we eat to what we do before bed, we strive to create a harmonious balance in our lives. One often overlooked aspect is the choice of sleepwear, and natural silk pajamas truly offer a multitude of benefits.

They are soft and provide unparalleled comfort. They gently touch the skin, allowing it to breathe and regulate its temperature naturally.

If you are prone to allergies, natural silk pajamas are a blessing because they have hypoallergenic properties. They help maintain moisture, prevent dryness and irritation, and reduce the risk of allergic reactions.

One of the most important qualities of silk pajamas is their ability to regulate body temperature. Silk is a natural insulator, keeping you warm in winter and providing comfortable coolness in summer. You will no longer need to over-cover yourself and will not feel the urge to toss and turn.

Silk is extremely breathable, allowing air to circulate and moisture to evaporate. This helps prevent excessive sweating and keeps you dry throughout the night. By reducing discomfort caused by sweat and humidity, silk pajamas can contribute to a more comfortable, restful, and undisturbed sleep.

Moreover, silk maintains skin hydration throughout the night, which can be beneficial for people with dry or sensitive skin.

Investing in a pair of natural silk pajamas means aligning your values with your choices and enhancing your sleep experience.

Silk vs. satin

Silk and satin are two completely different things and should not be confused. While silk is a natural fiber and can be woven into fabrics with a raw texture, plain textures, fine chiffon, and others, satin is a weave that gives a sheen to the surface of the fabric and can be woven using any fiber, such as cotton, linen, viscose, silk, etc.

Silk is obtained from silkworm larvae; the larvae feed on leaves for about 40 days, then spin a cocoon around themselves and turn into a pupa. This cocoon is formed from a protein-rich liquid that is then transformed into silk thread, as mentioned above. A single cocoon can produce a large amount of raw silk thread. The method is completely natural.

On the other hand, satin can be made from any of the following fibers, and its quality and price vary: silk, cotton, nylon, polyester, rayon, acetate, viscose. It is known for its glossy appearance and is very common in clothing design, interior decor items, and costume making.

The thickness of fabrics varies depending on the fiber used and the degree of twisting of the yarn. The way it is woven gives it that characteristic glossy finish. You can observe how satin has one shiny side and one matte side, which is precisely the result of the weaving process.

Silk pillowcase

Silk pillowcases are beneficial for hair and skin because they reduce friction, help maintain hydration, and are much gentler on the skin and hair than cotton and polyester. If you wake up with frizzy, static hair, lines on your face, and dull skin, you should try switching your pillowcase to a silk one, and you will see the difference. Silk is gentle on the skin, does not irritate, helps prevent hair breakage, keeps the skin hydrated, and contributes to better sleep.

Nothing compares to the instant comfort you get after putting on a pair of silk pajamas, after a busy day when all you want is to clear your mind and return to yourself. To fully grant yourself hours of sleep and rest, in a precious and extremely comfortable setting. And silk, yes, can work wonders—pajamas, a silk robe, silk pillowcases.
